ABOUT JAMES

James Martin is one of England's most prolific and versatile new cinematographers. He is dedicated to his craft and strives to maintain the highest standards of professionalism and quality of work.

James was accepted into the Metropolitan Film School in Ealing's two-year BA course during its first year and was the youngest student ever to graduate from the course.

Whilst there, he was taken under the wing of Paul Wheeler, BSC, a former BBC and freelance cinematographer (and renowned author). Paul helped James to take his craft to the next level and to work to standards a step above the usual student fare.

Despite the course being extremely intensive (it was a BA in two years) James always strove to go the extra mile with his cinematography work. At a time when the Met did not show anybody how to shoot film, James studied the art and science and became the only person in his class able to shoot it. He shot no fewer than three graduation films, one of which was shot on location in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Since graduation, James has developed a reputation as one of the hardest working young cinematographers in the industry. In less than two years, he has amassed more than 50 credits on both short and feature projects - almost all as Director of Photography. His proudest achievement so far is the feature film "Payback Season", due for cinematic release in March 2012.

He strongly believes in the importance of the bond between director and DoP. He believes it to be the single most important relationship on the set and one which must be treated with utmost respect. James always places the director's wishes first and everything that he shoots is always motivated by story - not the desire for flashy camerawork.

In his spare time, James enjoys riding motorbikes and playing computer games. He is also currently working on a new book on cinematography - "Strike a Light" - which has received some amazing feedback from several large DoPs. In the process of writing the book, James has had the good fortune to speak in great detail with some of his cinematography idols, such as Dean Semler, ASC ACS (Mad Max 2, Dances with Wolves - Oscar Winner, Apocalypto), Allen Daviau (E.T, The Color Purple) and Seamus McGarvey, BSC (Atonement, The Avengers). His interaction with these legendary cinematographers has enabled him to further develop his own work and to be fully confident in the work that he does.

James is currently available for work on projects of any size or budget. He is currently working on pre-production for two feature films due to shoot later this summer/autumn and is currently looking to fill the gap with smaller, interesting projects.

I own and operate a full Sony HDW-F900/3 CineAlta HDCAM Camera kit.

The Sony F900/3 is a very high-end, cinema quality camera with a reputation for producing images of the finest calibre. It is evolved from a long-line of television cameras, giving it ruggedness and practicality, but make no mistake - it is a very serious bit of kit!
